URSA Engage is designed to establish mentoring relationships between undergraduates early in their program at OSU, and OSU faculty members. It provides support for undergraduate engagement in research/creative activity under the guidance and mentorship of an OSU faculty member. An incentive is also provided to OSU faculty members to take on relatively inexperienced students who may not have been previously exposed to, or be aware of, the research/scholarship enterprise.

For the 2015-2016 academic year, a new model is being implemented as we explore options and build on feedback for strengthening the program. Under the new model, each faculty member and undergraduate can submit one joint application – details listed below. The program will provide $1,000 for undergraduates and $250 for faculty members in the form of development funds.

URSA Engage is designed to foster meaningful connectivity between students and faculty, and to engage undergraduates who might not otherwise engage in these opportunities at OSU. Selection of awardees will be based on creativity and quality of the proposed project and plans for establishing a mentoring relationship between an OSU faculty member and the undergraduate.

Undergraduate Eligibility: OSU undergraduates must be in their first year or second year of their undergraduate program, and transfer students in their first year (at the time of application). Each student can be included on only one application.

URSA Engage encourages participation by a diverse group of undergraduates with a variety of abilities. Undergraduates across all disciplines/colleges/schools/ majors at OSU are eligible.  No prior experience is required.

Faculty Mentor Eligibility: Faculty Mentors must be of professorial rank (Instructor, Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor). Graduate students, post-doctoral scholars and non-professorial staff are not eligible to serve in this capacity for this program. Each Faculty Mentor can submit only one application.

A new format is being implemented as we explore options and build on feedback for strengthening the program. Applications are to be submitted online. Each complete application will consist of a Faculty Mentor Application, and an Undergraduate Mentee Application, submitted separately by the faculty mentor and undergraduate mentee, respectively.

Under the new model, URSA Engage relationships between faculty members and undergraduates can be initiated in two ways:

  1. OSU faculty members can seek OSU undergraduates (first year, second year, and transfer students in their first year) interested in engaging in projects under their supervision. The Undergraduate Mentee’s name has to be included on the Faculty Mentor Application.
  2. OSU undergraduates in the first year or second year of their undergraduate program, and transfer students in their first year (at the time of application) can seek faculty members to discuss potential projects. The Faculty Mentor’s name has to be included on the Undergraduate Mentee Application.

URSA Engage Award Requirements:

  • URSA-Engage undergraduate awardees should engage in URSA Engage projects in winter and spring 2016. All funds MUST be spent no later than June 30, 2016.  Funds remaining unspent must be returned to the URSA-Engage program.
